"Macondo Revisitado: The Roots Of Subtropical Music (Uruguay 1975-1979)" is a music compilation released in 2016 by the Spanish reissue label Vampisoul. This release sheds light on a unique, often overlooked chapter of Latin music history: the golden era of tropical and Afro-Antillean music in Uruguay, centered around the independent label Macondo Discos.
Macondo Discos was founded in the 1970s in Montevideo by Chilean entrepreneur Luis Onel. Named after the fictional town in Gabriel García Márquez’s novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, it initially released folk, tango, murga, and rock.
Between 1975 and 1979, the label shifted its focus, becoming the powerhouse for Uruguayan "subtropical music." This term described Caribbean rhythms (like Cumbia and Plena) that were adapted by Uruguayan musicians, giving them a distinct, local flavor suited for the cooler climate of the Southern Cone.
Curated by Nandy Cabrera (also known as Selectorchico), the compilation features 21 remastered tracks from the label's peak years.
